Arduino Tcl/Tk — First Steps

Getting started with Tcl/Tk

An introduction to Tcl/Tk, a simple yet powerful environment for creating graphical applications and using a computer as the interface for electronics projects.

The idea is to start with the essentials and gradually discover why Tcl/Tk remains such an interesting tool in this field.

Why Tcl/Tk?

In this first book, we take a brief look at Tcl/Tk, a simple yet versatile general-purpose interpreted language.

Tcl is widely used in electronics, particularly in environments involving FPGAs, and it also comes with Tk, its graphical toolkit.

Tcl + Tk

Tcl is already interesting on its own, but Tk makes it easy to create graphical interfaces, turning the combination into an especially appealing tool for electronics projects.

More than hardware control

One of the advantages of Tcl/Tk is that what you learn is not limited to your electronics projects.

You can also use it to create your own:

  • desktop applications;
  • graphical interfaces for controlling hardware;
  • support tools for your projects;
  • GUI applications that you can adapt to your own needs.

In other words, the same environment you use to communicate with an electronics project can also be used to build the application that controls it.

A starting point

This first book is designed as an introduction: a way to get to know Tcl/Tk, start working with graphical interfaces, and discover what it can do before moving on to more complex projects.
